Historical Sociological Aspects of Prague Rapid Transit Projects from the Competition of Elektrické podniky Company in 1931

1 Abstract This thesis discusses rapid transit system proposals from competition of Elektrické podniky company in 1931 that had been announced due to worsening traffic situation in the metropolitan area. The first part of this thesis serves as a framework for the second part - it introduces the history of Prague and railway transport in it until the first Czechoslovak republic and thus enables easier orientation in context of this issue. The second part itself consists of review of all competitive designs and then analyzes them through research questions, which are based on particular social aspects. To each of the following aspects, there is a specific subchapter devoted: inhabitation and economically significant areas in Prague, problems with public transport, selected functions of stations, trainsets and their capacitive sufficiency and comfort, planned changes in built-up areas in Prague. These then serve as tools for comparation and final evaluation of technical solutions from historical sociological perspective. For the research analysis in second part, archive materials of Dopravní podnik hlavního města Prahy are being used as a source, supplemented by thematically relevant literature in the first part. Semiotic and anthropological analysis of Prague metro

Presented diploma work called "Semiotic and anthropological analysis of Prague metro" shows metro to a reader as a place from a semiotic point of view. A metro "user" plays a key role in the whole diploma work. Apart from dealing with metro as a place, this work also regards a reference of a fixed structure of metro to a city. The work also pays attention to an analysis of signs that can be found there by a metro user and can serve him as a useful tool for better orientation there. In the theoretical part semiotics as a science and its approaches are being presented. The diploma work also deals with a topic of a city from an antropological point of view. It applies, for example, a question of place and nonplace, picture of a city or a map and itineraries. The applied part of the work presents use of the theory in Prague metro. It also deals with orientation, navigational sign systems and comunication systems. Other topic examined in this diploma work is a role of Prague metro and its city surroundings in a mental city mapping done by its user. Besides, the work shows the metro and its surroundings as a place of everyday life. Evolution of visual style of the Prague Metro

The aim of the thesis is to describe the development of the Prague metro's appearance and to study the application of a uniform visual style in its current environment. The theoretical section describes the history of the Prague metro and investigates the topic of visual communication and unified visual styles with a focus on information and wayfinding systems applied in public transport environments. The key topic examined in this work is the development of the visual style in Prague's metro from its opening to the present day. Preparatory studies of the metro's information and wayfinding systems and the finally applied systems are both described. This section includes a description of individual visual elements and important information about the authors of these systems, Jiří Rathouský and Rostislav Vaňek. The current visual communication style seen in Prague's metro is also described in this section. Planned and tested variants of new systems are also examined. The empirical section of the thesis investigates the currently applied visual style in Prague's metro. Elements from the graphic manual are described and adherence to a uniform visual style is analysed, including how certain elements have been applied at selected Prague metro stations.

Experimentální výzkum spolehlivosti těsnění kabelových prostupů v Pražském metru po povodních v létě 2002

Confluence of the rivers Berounka and Sázava and outflows from the Vltava dam cascade caused the flow in the lower part of the river Vltava in Prague. The Vltava culminated in Prague on 14 August with a flow of 5160 m3.s-1; this corresponds to a period of recurrence of 500 years. The extension of floods in the Vltava valley in Prague caused penetration of water into underground spaces of the Metro and water flooded 19 of 53 underground stations. Looseness of cable bushings through pressure interfaces and non-closure of some pressure interfaces were the most important cause of spreading of water in underground spaces. After the floods of August 2002 the accredited laboratory CTU in Prague, Klokner Institute designed a methodology of experiments and testing system and performed tests on reliability of cable bushings and on material properties of the U 5000. Results of experiments lead to the recommendation to replace all the existing cable bushing in Prague Metro
